Connect Wi-Fi
Ethernet is enough for the office network. Use this page only if Locai One must join Wi-Fi after first setup.
Prerequisites
Section titled “Prerequisites”- First setup is complete. You can sign in to the Admin Console.
- The ethernet cable is still plugged in.
- Keep the ethernet cable plugged in.
- Open Network, then Wi-Fi. Nearby networks are listed. Choose one and connect. Select Scan to refresh the list.
- Confirm the Admin Console still opens. Then you can unplug ethernet.
Locai One asks only for what the network needs. An open network connects straight away. A WPA2 or WPA3 network asks for the Wi-Fi password. An Enterprise network (WPA2 or WPA3 Enterprise, also called 802.1X) asks for your network username and password.
Enterprise networks
Section titled “Enterprise networks”An Enterprise network signs you in through a sign-in server (RADIUS server). Fill in:
- Username and Password: your network account.
- Server domain (optional): the name on the sign-in server’s certificate, for example
radius.example.com. Locai One fills it in from the certificate it reads. With it set, Locai One refuses a look-alike network that tries to collect the password.
Most networks work with the defaults. If IT gives you other settings, open Advanced (all optional):
- Sign-in method: Automatic, PEAP or TTLS. Automatic starts with PEAP, the method Windows, macOS and Android use, and switches to TTLS only when the network asks for it.
- Inner method: Automatic, MSCHAPv2, GTC or PAP. PAP needs TTLS.
- Anonymous name: the name sent before the secure connection starts, for example
anonymous@example.com. Leave it empty to send your username.
Certificate trust
Section titled “Certificate trust”Before it sends your password, Locai One checks the sign-in server’s certificate. A certificate is the server’s proof of identity, issued by a certificate authority (CA). Locai One reads it without sending your password.
- If a well-known CA issued it and Automatically install required certificates is selected (the default), Locai One installs the certificates for that network and connects. A message says how many certificates were installed.
- Otherwise Locai One shows Trust this network’s certificate? with the server name, who issued it, when it expires and its fingerprint. Ask IT to confirm the fingerprint, then select Trust and connect.
The certificates apply to that network only. Forget removes them.
Known networks
Section titled “Known networks”Known networks lists every network Locai One has saved, with its state: Connected, Saved, Out of range, or the last error. Select Connect to switch to a saved network without typing the password again. Other networks lists the networks in range that are not saved.
Disconnect leaves the network and keeps the saved password, so you can join it again without typing the password. Forget removes the password and the network’s certificates.
If a connection fails
Section titled “If a connection fails”If you reach the Admin Console over Wi-Fi, the connection drops while Locai One switches network. Reconnect your computer to the network Locai One is joining, or wait for it to come back.
If the new network refuses Locai One, Locai One reconnects to the network it was on, and the Admin Console says why:
- Certificate not trusted: check Server domain with IT, or trust the certificate when asked.
- Wrong sign-in method: set Sign-in method to Automatic, or to the method IT names.
- Device or account refused: the network refused Locai One before checking the password. Ask IT to allow this device. The Admin Console shows its Wi-Fi MAC address.
- Wrong username or password: type them again.
- Network not found: the network is out of range.
Captive portals
Section titled “Captive portals”Some guest networks need you to sign in on a web page before the internet works. This page is called a captive portal. When Locai One is connected but stopped by a captive portal, the Admin Console says so with the network name and the page address, for example Guest Wi-Fi needs you to sign in. Sign in on that page, or choose another network.
After connecting
Section titled “After connecting”After Wi-Fi shows Connected, a laptop on the same wireless network can open the Admin Console at https://locai-<serial>.local (the name printed on Locai One). If the name does not resolve, the office access point is blocking local discovery. Use the Wi-Fi address on Network, or use the Public domain.
Joining Wi-Fi can change the address of Locai One. If the Admin Console does not load afterwards, reconnect over ethernet.
Plug in one USB Wi-Fi adapter. If two are attached, Locai One uses one and turns the other off, so they cannot both join the same network.
